With an atmosphere that resembles a movie premiere, José Antonio Fernández, director of the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex, announced the official list of players who will compete from July 29 to August 3 in Los Cabos, BCS.
Initial tournament confirmations included the Italian Fabio Fognini (No. 10), a tennis player who recently achieved a career milestone by making his Top 10 debut in the ATP Rankings; the Argentine Diego Schwartzman (No. 23), recent semifinalist in the Rome Masters 1000; the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (No. 45) and the Spanish Feliciano Lopez (No. 113). Conclusively, just a few days ago, the Argentine Juan Martín del Potro (No. 12), last year’s finalist, will return to Los Cabos to prove that his struggle with injuries have been left behind as he begins his comeback into the top of the rankings.
Moreover, the Frenchman Lucas Pouille (No. 29), semifinalist at this year’s Australian Open, is set to join the roster; Chilean Cristian Garín (No. 32) recent champion of the tournaments in Sao Paulo and Houston; the Moldovan Radu Albot (No.41) and reigning champion of the ATP in Delray Beach, and the American Taylor Fritz (No.42), a player who has participated in all four editions of the ATC.
The Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin (No. 47) returns to Los Cabos after his first appearance in 2017. Meanwhile, Cameron Norrie (No. 49), the second best British player in the world rankings and the Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (No. 62) will return to the hard courts of Cabo San Lucas after reaching the 2018 semifinals; Dzumur was also a semifinalist in 2017.
Another name that is included inside of the ATC 2019 list is the Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero (No. 59). He made his Los Cabos debut in 2016 playing in the qualifying draw yet now, he will compete in the main draw after having made a name for himself this year by breaking into the Top 100 – Londero won the title in Córdoba and reached the fourth round of Roland Garros.
“Having the presence of Fognini, Del Potro, Schwartzman, Dimitrov and Pouille, players who are typically figures among the top 30 in the world, as well as breakout stars like Garín and Londero, gives us the confidence to predict that this will be the best edition of our tournament,” said Fernandez.
The list of 2019 ATC players is completed with the Australian John Millman (No. 57), fourth best Australian ranked inside of the Top 100; American Steve Johnson (No. 76), titleholder of four ATP tournaments; the Serbian Janko Tipsarevic (No. 88); the Latvian Ernests Gulbis (No. 90), the American Tennys Sandgren (No. 91), champion in Auckland after defeating Norrie; Indian Prajnesh Gunnerswaran (No. 95) and the German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (No. 95 with a protected ranking).
“It is with great satisfaction to present a picture as complete as this,” said the director. “Our tournament is competing during the same week of Washington and Kitzbuhel, tournaments that have been on the tour for many years; being able to offer the public a roster as competitive as the current one, speaks volumes about the attention that the tournament has been winning among the players themselves”.
PROGRAM “ATC CARES”
Along with the presentation of players, José Antonio Fernández announced the “ATC Cares” program which integrates different initiatives to support the community, the environment, and human development.
“2019 will represent the fourth year of our tournament and we believe that it is time to give a little in return to Los Cabos, a city who has welcomed and supported us from day one,” said Fernández.
“As a show of support to the community, we will donate a tennis court with the same features as our headquarters to the Don Koll Sports Unit. We have also reinforced efforts with sponsors, staff and the public to reduce the impact we generate on the environment. Finally, we will carry out the first ‘ATC Family Day’, an event to promote a healthy lifestyle and where we will invite different associations to provide health services and advice to parents,” explained the tournament director.
Lastly, the ATC has welcomed three new sponsors who will join the tournament this year: Interprotección, AT&T and Homie.mx.
Tickets for the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex are on sale at the Mextenis box office (Mexico City and Los Cabos) as well as through the Ticketmaster system.
Juan Martin del Potro will undergo yet another surgery. The Argentine announced on Thursday that he has again fractured his right patella, the same injury that made the 6’6″ right-hander miss the last four weeks of the 2018 season and has limited him to only five tournaments so far this year.
Del Potro slipped near the net in the eighth game of the second set of his first-round match with Denis Shapovalov at the Fever-Tree Championships on Wednesday. Although the Argentine went on to advance in straight sets, he underwent medical exams after noticing pain and swelling in his right knee.
