Fognini wins his first hard court title in Los Cabos

Los Cabos, BCS, August 4, 2018. -With a masterful performance, the Italian Fabio Fognini became the new champion of the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex, after defeating the Argentine favorite Juan Martín del Potro in straight sets.

Playing a solid match, Fognini neutralized the main weapons of the Tandilense to win 6-4, 6-2. Delpo lost his serve four times, two in the first set and twice in the second, where he let the possibility of winning the Mexican double slip.

Fabio adds his eighth ATP singles title and third of the season after Sao Paulo and Bastad; this is his first on hard court for what turned out to be a historic day for him. Faced with a full Pegaso Stadium, Fognini, 31, only had a few problems at the start of the match, but finished it off great in order to lift the trophy. With this defeat, del Potro also lost the opportunity to climb to number three in the world in case of a defeat of the German Alexander Zverev at the ATP 500 in Washington.

“I failed at everything, I could not hit my backhand properly- Fabio realized that it did not hurt him then he threw me 80 or 90 percent of the balls there. There are better days, others not as much how I played today, but when I play against a rival as smart as Fabio, it is very complicated. The double was not easy, Fabio has played very well; secondly, the ranking is not an issue that concerns me or that is a priority for me, we will see at the US Open, which is one of my favorite tournaments. But, I have to be in better conditions especially on my backhand,” said Delpo, who lost his second final of the season.

On his behalf, “Fogna” said he was happy with the way he improved his game during the week in which he had a slow start; on Monday, he will climb in the world ATP rankings.

“It cost me a lot, obviously winning against a player like that gives me a lot of confidence because I always knew I could beat him and in the end, I achieved something that was a goal in my career; winning a hardcourt tournament and winning it against an elite player, a top player.”

Fabio Fognini announced that his next tournament will be the Masters 1000 in Toronto, where will play singles and doubles, ironically, pairing with Juan Martín del Potro.
