Juan Martin del Potro is returning to Los Cabos

The good news continues for the Abierto de Tennis Mifel presentado por Cinemax; a few weeks before the start of the fourth edition, the organization has confirmed the return of Argentine Juan Martin del Potro to the tournament in Los Cabos.

Ranked No. 12 in the world rankings after his recent results at Roland Garros, Del Potro has chosen the 2019 ATC as his first hardcourt tournament going into the second half of the season.

It should be noted that following the final he played in Los Cabos, Del Potro reached No. 3 in the world rankings — his best career high ranking to date. During his run at the US Open, the Argentine reached the final, where he fell to Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Weeks after his adventure at Flushing Meadows, Del Potro suffered a knee injury at the Shanghai Masters, which ended his season and prevented him from participating in the Nitto ATP Finals.

After a six month rehabilitation stint, the Tandil born finally returned to the courts in Madrid. A couple of weeks after his resurgence in the Spanish capital, Del Potro was officially back in form in Rome where he reached the quarterfinals. He fell to the world No. 1, Novak Djokovic, in a dramatic three sets.

At Roland Garros, Del Potro showed great signs of his physical improvement as he advanced to the Round of 16, where he lost to Russian Karen Khachanov. Along the way, the 30-year-old tennis player defeated the Chilean Nicolás Jarry, Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka, and Australian Jordan Thompson.

“It’s great news for us that (Juan Martín) Del Potro has decided to return to Los Cabos,” said José Antonio Fernández, director of the Abierto Los Cabos. “We have a great relationship with him and his team, and we know they were very grateful for the entire experience we offered them last year.”

Del Potro, who is set to start his grass court tour which will conclude at Wimbledon, joins the defending champion of the tournament, Italian Fabio Fognini, the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, Spaniard Feliciano López, and his compatriot Diego Schwartzman.

“Tennis is a sport that is capable of offering instant rematches – now we are facing the possibility that Del Potro and Fognini will meet again in Los Cabos. However, we are sure that this year’s competition will be a lot tighter, especially considering the names that have already confirmed and those that we will to announce in the coming days, “Fernandez said.

The fourth edition of the Abierto de Tennis Mifel presentado por Cinemax will take place from July 29th to August 3rd at the courts of Delmar International School. Tickets are on sale now at ticket offices in Mexico City and Los Cabos, and through the Ticketmaster system.
