Rodrigo Pacheco, a hope for Mexican tennis

  • The 17-year-old player is playing for the first time in the main draw of an ATP Tournament.

Los Cabos, July 31:

Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco, who this year reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros Junior, has a golden opportunity at the Mifel 2022 Tennis Open, which is being played this week in Los Cabos.

The results of the young Mexican have not gone unnoticed in Mexico and for Mextenis, which organizes the ATC, as they have seen of Rodrigo`s potential for Mexico to have a tennis player within the Top-100 in the coming years.

“I’m going to play my first main draw at the professional level and I think it’s an incredible opportunity” shared Pacheco with the Tournament this Sunday in which he offered interviews to the press where he also acknowledged that few players in the world receive these opportunities at 17 years.

“I’m very happy and excited for the support of Geoffrey Fernandez -Tournament Director- and to everyone who supported me to get here, I’m going to try to take evert advantage and enjoy it to the fullest”.

On Saturday, the draw placed Pacheco in the possibility of playing against the world No. 1, Russian Daniil Medevedev, top seed, but for that to happen, Pacheco will have to overcome the first round in which he will face a player coming from the qualifying round.

“This is something very new for me, but I think I’m ready for it even though I still lack a little bit of experience and competing more at this level, where the best in the world play.”

Although, he is young and with limited experience at the high level, Pacheco, who is coached by Mexican Alan Lemaitre, accepted that “sooner or later you have to get to compete against the best to realize what you need to improve”.

In addition, he said that in the near future he hopes to reach tournaments in Mexico, such as the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco and the Mifel Tenis Open in Los Cabos, “being among the favorites and having a chance to be one of the players designated to win the tournament”.

Rodrigo considered that this opportunity comes at the best time “it is one of the steps that have to be taken and being now a junior level player, sooner or later, you have to move to the professional level”.

“It’s better to do it before many other players who are of age and that’s why I feel that now is the best time to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Pacheco.

On the Mexican’s calendar is scheduled the US Open, his fourth junior Grand Slam, then he will play other professional tournaments and next year is going to be his last at the junior level.

“I would like to play the Grand Slams and I would love to win one. I know I have many opportunities to do it and I am ready, but also the goal is to reach a higher rank on a professional level and make the final jump to professional,” he stated.

Fabio Fognini; above Tennis a great father figure and human being.

Current World No. 64, Fognini was champion at Los Cabos in 2018
The Italian is married to former tennis player Flavia Penetta and has three children.

Mexico City, June the 18th, 2022.- Born on the 24th of May, 1987 in San Remo, Italy.
Fabio Fognini is known to never have been afraid to speak his mind, but its also rarely revealed whats behind his personality, besides the obvious (a great tennis player), making it impossible for him to go unnoticed on any match.

Holding a racket since he was 4 years old, like many Italians, his first passion was with soccer, even confessing that there are many times when he prefers to kick the ball even though he knows that tennis has given him everything , quoting his very own words, “Tennis is my profession a job for me, not a sport”.

“Fogna”, as he is nicknamed, can freely speak his mind and my also seem very controversial with some of his remarks or comments, despite some topics.

His laidback personality can be seen in and off the courts, even one could easily say that he doesn`t require much effort to get noticed.

Making the leap to professional in 2004 at the age of 17. The first of his titles would come in 2013. Few know that at 18 he suffered severe wrist pains, so a doctor told him that surgery with a (50-50) chance of full recovery was his best option if he wanted to play again. Despite the odds and almost two decades later he hasn`t had to go under any medical procedure.

In 2016 he married former Top 10 (WTPA) tennis player, Flavia Penetta, winner of the 2015 US Open, having three kids; Federico, Farah and Flaminia.

In 2019 he became the first Italian to win a Masters 1000, (Monte Carlo), an achievment that made him the oldest player to enter the Top 10 at age 32. His highest ATP ranking has been No. 9, (securing it on July 2019) and also his latest title so far.

Eight of his last 9 titles have been on clay, a surface on which his style of playing stands out nicely. Therefore having his best performance in Roland Garros, reaching quarterfinals in 2011.
This year at Indian Wells he became the Italian with the most recorded wins in tour history, surpassing Adriano Panatta.

Fabio Fognini has shared that he is now focused on enjoying the last years of his career and that he`s happy.

“Peque” Schwartzman seeks to grow at Los Cabos, where he`s previosly been a champion

– The Argentinian and current No. 14 outclassed Taylor Fritz in the 2019 edition to win the title.

Mexico City, July the 11th.- When the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (No. 14 ATP) steps into any court, the first thing that stands out for those who havent´t met him is his height with just barely 1.70 meters tall (5.5 feet), when in average tennis player measures more than 1.80 meters (5.9 feet).

So taking that into consideration, Schwartzman next to any tennis player is considered “small”, a word from which derives his nickname “Peque” (spanish meaning small boy or short) as he`s known, born in Buenos Aires in 1992.

In addition to his height, Schwartzman weighs 64 kilograms (141 pounds). Ten kilos less than the average player. Both factors have not prevented him from winning titles, having won 4 already in his career; Istanbul 2016, Rio de Janeiro 2018, Los Cabos 2019 and Buenos Aires 2021.

Diego delivers a good tennis, his driven and disciplined and besides, he has a great connection with the Mexican crowd.

The Argentinian was one of the last two star players to join the open, alongside the Italian Fabio Fognini.

Schwartzman will compete with higher ranked players such as; the Russian Daniil Medvedev (No. 1), Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime (No. 9) and Britain’s Cameron Norrie (No.11).

With the presence of “Peque” and Fognini, the 6th edition of the tournament, will have the participation of it`s last three champions. The Italian Fognini who won in 2018, Schwartzman 2019 and Norrie 2021, current defending champion and reaching Wimbledon`s semifinals.

In addition to Schwartzman, two more Argentinians will also be attending the Open at Los Cabos, Tomas Martín Etcheverry and Facundo Bagnis.

Norrie, defending champion in Los Cabos

Announcement: Coaching allowed during matches

Mexico City, June 21st, 2022.- Starting July 11th and until the end of the season (November), the ATP has announced that they will allow coaching “off court” during qualifying and main draw matches as a trial, following the example that the WTA already implemented in 2020.

Over the years, different players have been warned during games for this practice, with Stefanos Tsitsipas being the most recient player accused of receiving advice from his father and coach Apostolos Tsitsipas in some matches.

Now coaches and their players will be able to interact whenever they consider necessary during different tournaments, as a trial, of course always respecting the rules.

The Mifel Tennis Open, takes part on the second half of the ATP tour calendar, so attendees will be able to closely watch how the coaching practice works. This could mean the end of an era if after the trial period it`s decided to leave this practice permanently.

The ATP has been very clear in the conditions that it will authorize:

• Coaches must be seated in their designated área only.
• Coaching (verbal and non-verbal) is only allowed if it does not interrupt the game and does not create a distraction during the opponent’s point or turn.
• Verbal coaching is only allowed when the player is on the same side of his serve/court
• Non-verbal coaching (signs) are allowed at any given moment.
• Verbal coaching will consist of a few words and/or short phrases, full conversations or indications are not allowed at any moment.
• Coaches must not speak to their players when they abandono or leave the court for any reason.
• Sanctions or fines will be applied in case of misuse or negligence to respect.

The goal is to create some sort of intriguing moments or “on court” analysis that may fuel the fans curiosity or entertainment experience, as well as to provide players with some playing consistency.

It is worth mentioning that in previous years the tour had launched these sort of trials while coaching “on court” thru the use of headphones. Mainly on the NextGen finals, where this modality received some criticism, or non acceptance.
